As a part of a package of information presented by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at a conference in Chicago in 2009 by George Legarreta of the FAA Office of Airport Safety and Standards, the FAA said that on average there is one runway overrun incident every 8.5 days and, in 2007, 50% of all aviation fatalities (220) were attributable to aircraft overruns. Runway overruns, said the FAA, are the fourth largest cause of fatalities worldwide. Maintaining appropriate levels of runway friction is therefore imperative, writes Ian McInnes
