CRACKS & JOINTS: 'FLEX-FILL' TECHNIQUE
APPLICATIONS
All types of cracks or joints in bituminous pavements with a maximum width of 10 mm where the surface
is sound. Not suitable for cracks where considerable movements are anticipated or transverse cracks which
penetrate as far as the base or sub-base.
ADVANTAGES
Level and neat finish, band of consistent width; good penetration of an appropriate grade
of flexible sealant accommodates thermal movements.
WORK METHOD
The
cracks or joints are enlarged by milling with a Klaruw router to a width
of 15-20 mm and a depth of 10-20 mm. Following this, the groove is blasted
dry and clean using Klaruw’s purpose designed SuperJet hot air lance.
Immediately after this and while the horizontal and vertical bonding surfaces
are still hot, the groove is filled with a flexible sealant, a high-grade
filling compound. This is applied using a narrow screed box. Natural or
artificial coloured crushed slate dust, heated chippings or calcined bauxite
to choice is spread on the surface to complete the repair.
COMMENTS
The treatment has been applied by us on frequent occasions
since 1988 and has been proven in use.
